Airport drop-off charges have quietly become another hidden holiday cost. But many of the UK’s busiest airports still offer free alternatives – if you know where to look.
A quick goodbye at the terminal could now cost you up to £10. New analysis by Global Work & Travel reveals that drivers are paying as much simply to stop outside UK airport terminals – despite many airports offering free or cheaper alternatives via long-stay or mid-stay car parks.
Yet there’s a loophole many travellers overlook. Several of the UK’s busiest airports offer free or cheaper drop-off options via long-stay or mid-stay car parks, complete with shuttle buses to the terminal.
Global Work & Travel says these fees should now be considered part of the true cost of travelling. At Gatwick or Stansted, a driver dropping someone off and later collecting them from the same terminal zone could pay £20 for a single return journey. For households making two airport runs over the summer holidays, that could rise to £40 before anyone has even checked in.
“Airport drop-off used to feel like a quick favour. Now, for many households, it is another small cost added to flights, baggage, food, insurance and transfers,” says Jürgen Himmelmann, co-founder of Global Work & Travel.
“It is not always a huge amount on its own, but that is exactly why people get caught out. These charges sit in the background until you’re at the barrier, tapping your card and wondering why a ten-minute goodbye costs almost as much as lunch at the airport.”
